Scattering ashes

What to expect, and how we can help

A calm, personal goodbye

Our standard scattering is a trip of around an hour from Chatham Maritime Marina out onto the River Medway. One of us, usually Jane, will meet you at the marina gates, and from then on we’ll look after everything, guiding you gently through the scattering itself at whatever pace feels right for your family.

Here’s some practical information to help you plan. If anything isn’t covered, just give us a call.

A floral tribute on board, with family gathered at the stern

Up to 10 guests but larger groups can watch from the shore

Song and Dance is licensed for up to 10 people on board, and that includes a priest or celebrant if you’d like one with you. This is an absolute maximum, so please don’t ask us to exceed it. We hate having to say no.

But if  more than 10 people would like to be there, we can take the boat close to a river bank viewing area so those on the shore can see what’s happening. It’s about a five-minute drive or a 15–20 minute walk from the marina. When we can, we’ll agree a time for the ceremony to be near high tide so we can get close to the shore as possible for everyone there to see clearly.  Some families give those on the shore flowers to place in the water at the same moment.  This is also a useful option for families with children …there’s room to run about and play, and for anyone who might have difficulty getting on the boat . It is also appreciated by families who would like to visit the site of the scattering, and remember.

We’ll send full directions when you book.

Music, prayers and tributes

Bring favourite music, poetry or prayers on your phone and we’ll play them through the boat’s sound system. Flowers, petals and anything else that’s readily biodegradable can go into the river with the ashes.

Your faith and customs

We’ve helped families of many different faiths, denominations and traditions…or none. Tell us what’s important to you and we’ll do everything we can to make sure the scattering is carried out properly.

When we go out

We don’t have set times. Let us know what suits your family and we’ll do our best to fit around your plans.

The weather

We can go out in just about all weather, but occasionally strong winds or frosty/icy days make it unsafe. If the forecast looks poor, we’ll be in touch a day or so beforehand to talk through the options.

Urns

Please speak to Jane before you decide whether or not to buy a special urn. She is always happy to advise on what works best on the water, and the pros and cons of different types.

Rules on board

There are just a few common-sense rules for everyone’s safety on board, which we’ll talk you through when you get in touch. There’s nothing to worry about.

Ready to talk it through?

There’s no pressure and no obligation. Just call us for a chat about what you have in mind, and we’ll help in any way we can.
